former deputy marshal ed van haren died in pinal general hospital after a lenghty illness born in ruby az he came to florence with his parents at the age of nine months. he attended florence grammer school and as a youth worked as a cowboy and farmer and drove freight wagons. in 1908 he helped with the construction of the arizona state prison. for 18 yrs after his marriage he worked as a cowboy, cattle rancher, farmer and had his own combine crew. he operated a ferry across the gila river. he was employed by the san carlos irrigation project when they were constructing the diversion dam and canal to casa grande. in 1929 he was construction foreman at the arizona state prison. one year later he became a deputy for the pinal county sheriff's office. in 1932 he went back to the prison as a corrections officer and with the exception of the years 1940 to 1945 when he was florence deputy town marshall, he remained an employee of the prison until his retirement.
